My journey working for Clearview Cleaning Services

Deb was recently asked to pose for a recruitment photograph and wrote the following about her journey with Clearview-

‘My name is Deb, and I moved to Hereford four and a half years ago. I wanted a part time job in the afternoons to fit round my family life. I have worked as a cleaner where I lived before and started looking for local companies that could offer me the type of work and hours I needed.

A family member recommended talking to Clearview Cleaning Services. I am a shy person and was nervous when I first spoke with the team, I was made to feel so welcome and met the lovely office staff. They found me a contract cleaning at a school in town, which I started, and worked there for 12 months in a small team. I was then offered to start at a new Clearview contract at Holmer Primary School, as a Team Leader looking after a small team during the evenings. I have been here now for 3 years, and absolutely love it.

I was given great support, and training from the Clearview management team in what was my first Team Leader role. I work with a great team of cleaners, who work to a high standard, in a friendly local school. We have a great relationship with the staff at Holmer School, who always make us feel welcome when we are on site. I feel lucky that I made that call over 4 years ago, as I now feel part of a great local company, who value their staff, and are always there with advice and help whenever I need it.’

Gender pay gap 2022

Companies with more than 250 staff in the U.K. are required to report on their gender pay gap. Our figures read as follows. The mean difference for hourly fixed pay between men and women was 2.87 percent (2020) and 3 percent (2021). This year the difference has reduced to 2.65 percent, compared with a national average of 15.5 percent. This is obviously something we are proud of.

On another positive note when comparing mean (average) hourly pay, women cleaning operatives pay was 4.1% lower in 2020 and in 2021 the gap has closed to 3% and closed still further to 2.6 percent in 2022.In our organization 62 percent of women occupied the highest paid jobs, This is a lower percentage than in previous years. 80 percent of women occupy the lowest paid jobs. This figure equates to the percentage of women/men we employ .Although this is all positive and we would always support the narrowing of the gender pay gap. As an industry and a business we are extremely short staffed and new employees are taken on purely on capability. We have experienced difficulties in recruitment this year and we do not see this improving in the short term. We permanently have vacancies, the rate of pay on those vacancies varies dependent on the requirements of the client. So the rate of pay is attached to a specific job and not to a person. Some of our employees have several rates of pay dependent on the site where they clean.

Gender pay gap reporting Clearview Cleaning Services 2020 and 2021

Companies with more than 250 staff in the U.K. are required to report on their gender pay gap. Due to the pandemic we are reporting last years figures and this years at the same time.

The mean difference for hourly fixed pay between men and women was 2.87 percent (2020) and 3 percent (2021) compared with a national average of 15.5 percent. This is obviously something we are proud of.

On the 5th April 2019 women in our company earned 98p for every pound that men earn. In 2020 this increased to 99p for every pound men earn and in 2021 women earn £1 for every £1 that men earn.

On another positive note when comparing mean (average) hourly pay, women cleaning operatives pay was 4.1% lower in 2020 and in 2021 the gap has closed to 3%.

In our organization 69% (2020) 77% (2021) of women occupied the high paid jobs. 63% (2020) 74% (2021) of women occupy the lowest paid jobs. This figure roughly equates to the percentage of women /men we employ – 2021 75% women.

Although this is all positive and we would always support the narrowing of the gender pay gap. As an industry and a business we are extremely short staffed and new employees are taken on purely on capability. We nearly always have vacancies and the rate of pay on those vacancies varies dependent on need of the client. So the rate of pay is attached to a specific job and not to a person. Some of our employees have several rates of pay dependent on the site where they clean.

Retirement after 26 years cleaning at school

Ben Tyler met two retiring cleaners at Baxter College last week. Both long term employees of Clearview Cleaning Services.

Irene started with Clearview as a cleaning operative some 26 years ago with June joining us some years later.

Irene will be the first to admit that when she started cleaning at Baxter she had reservations that she would stay even a week. However, thankfully she did and very quickly showed her capability, stepping in when the current supervisor was ill.

Irene quickly became established as the supervisor at Baxter and with June soon became the solid foundations of the Clearview Cleaning Team.

There have been some ups and downs, personal upsets and of course more recently the pandemic to deal with. The one true valued asset throughout the years has been Irene’s commitment to Clearview Cleaning Services.

On occasions Irene has dealt with 5 staff shortages in one evening, and she has managed the absences with her fabulous team helping.

A key to Irene’s success has been to manage the team always promoting that employees work in individual areas with their own tasks but as a team to achieve and accomplish the results needed.

Baxter College have thanked us for the way the contract has been managed and also how much Irene and June will be missed as part of the Baxter/Clearview Team.

As an expression of thanks for all the hard work over the last 26 years Ben visited the school to say ” Thank you” to Irene and June on behalf of Jane and Eddie Directors and all of the team at Head Office.

The ladies were a little camera shy and to be fair they had just walked to work in 30 degrees of heat! Ben did however manage a picture of the gifts presented to them for their dedication and service.

We wish Irene and June the “Healthy and happy retirement”.

Cleaning during the COVID-pandemic

It has been a challenging year for everyone and it has been uplifting to receive such positive feedback from from so many sites that remained open throughout. The office team have worked hard to re-organise the workforce and implement the changes of procedures but it is the cleaning operatives who have often go over and above and it’s great when they get recognised for this. This is the most recent email that we’ve received and we’d like to thank all of our operatives who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to keep sites clean and safe.

Dear Clearview Management Team,

I wanted to contact you to tell you how pleased we are with the cleaning support that we have from our colleague Jane.  Jane has been essential in supporting the service to remain open throughout the pandemic.

A recent staffing review showed that our clinical team had no time off due to ill health during the pandemic and we believe that this is partly due to the superb hygiene levels and infection control that is carried out by Jane. The team know that they are safe and trust that the clinic space is always maintained by Jane, that they can start afresh every day. In turn they are aware of keeping Jane safe too and making sure they follow stringent infection control procedures. In a meeting yesterday with our Commissioners, Herefordshire Council, Jane was highlighted as being pivotal to the service and I was asked to personally thank her for her commitment and dedication to the service.

Not only that, she’s a pleasure to have in the clinic as an important part of our team.

Kind regards,

Gary

Our response to COVID-19

“Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our staff and clients”

We introduced measures back in March designed to keep everyone safe.

  • Hand washing when arriving on site, when moving to new areas and before leaving
  • Two metre social distancing to be always adhered to and if there is a problem with observing this, we work with the client to ensure that this is made possible
  • Guidance for safe working during COVID training is given to all employees
  • Adherence to all site-specific requirements, wearing PPE, temperature checks etc.

We were fortunate that we already used Selgiene Ultra on our sites. Selgiene Ultra is a viricidal cleaner that kills Corona virus. Our operatives were already trained in its use, so we were quickly able to adjust cleaning regimes and continued working on all sites that remained open during lockdown.

As more information has emerged, we have modified cleaning practices and continued to support our staff on site and work with our clients to help produce COVID secure workplaces.

As we move forward through the coming months, we will continue to review our Covid-19 guidelines based on information released by the government and look forward to supporting staff and clients during this time and out the other side.

A new era for Clearview

A new era for Clearview

We have been working hard to develop our new website to mirror the changes the company has made to its operations over the last 12 months. Thanks to the help, guidance and patience of Tom Powell web designer, we are finally ready to reveal it.

It has been developed with the intention of making life easier for our cleaners. They now have a ‘Cleaner Corner’ where they can place orders directly with us for materials, view apply for cover work or an additional position, request time-off and view their pay dates – all from their smart phone.

For our clients we have added the MSDS for the cleaning chemicals that we use on sites and our insurance details so that this important information is available whenever it is required, all via the ‘Client Corner’.

We have also had a ‘refresh’ of our brand guided by DesignbyKite and you will see the introduction of our new logo and colours as they appear on our vans, marketing and workwear over the coming weeks. You will continue to see our ‘old’ colours and workwear as we will not be throwing anything into landfill, it will be replaced at the end of its life, as we all have a responsibility for the environment.

To us this marks the beginning of the new Clearview era, where we have over the last 12 months updated and improved operational technology and brought our business back to focus on Herefordshire so that we can provide an improved service to our clients and better support our cleaning operatives.

We look forward to working with you all!
